Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
